USAccess Program Course Introduction – Sponsor Role

Welcome to the online training course for individuals who will be performing the Sponsor role.

The Sponsor role is critically important to ensuring that federal government employees and contractors are issued policy compliant credentials that the Federal Government can use for authentication. This is the individual who is responsible for creating PIV records in the USAccess system. In many agencies the Sponsor has the role of gate keeper, determining who the agency will sponsor for enrollment. The Sponsor is the only person who can create, edit, and manage USAccess PIV records.

Sponsors can edit biographic data and sponsorship information; select the address where an applicant's Credential will be delivered, reassign sponsorship; request Credential reissue, reprints, and certificate updates; and resend Sponsorship Complete and Credential Check-in emails.

USAccess Sponsors are subject to the directive that all departments and Agencies shall implement the PIV system in accordance with the spirit and letter of all federal privacy laws and policies. In an effort to enhance the security of Federal buildings, computers, and computer networks, the Federal Government has been directed to provide a standardized identity credential to all essential employees and contractors. HSPD-12 directs the implementation of this new standardized federal credential, which is designed to enhance security, reduce identity fraud, and protect personal privacy. The Executive Branch has developed a compliant Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential to ensure credentials can be uniformly trusted and used across government.
